Did Treyarch met expectations from whole Call of Duty community and fans? Did they grow up to be main developing team for Call of Duty franchise. To be honest, we think so but time will tell.

Call of Duty. The name itself brings back a lot of good memories, it makes you remember all the good hours spent playing it with your friends, shooting each other lasted for days, months even years. It’s franchise, we can freely say, the most expensive and the biggest one in the world of gaming. Until couple of years ago, it was a shooter like any other out there, taking inspiration for the storyline from World War 2. Call Of Duty franchise replaced Medal of Honor in that genre of shooters and it was more than successful. After releasing of fourth installment with name Modern Warfare and after introducing franchise with modern warfare itself, nothing stayed the same. That was the first franchise in which PR managers had even more work than developers from Infinity Ward. Main plot was like it was taken from the biggest Hollywood blockbusters, and action better than anything we have seen up till then. Plot was good but not great, but you can’t really expect deep philosophy in this kind of shooter. One year later, Treyarch brings back the franchise in World War 2, but that trip was pretty short, because the year after that, Infinity Ward made another blockbuster sequel continuing Modern Warfare franchise under one big franchise. Activision sold over 4.9 million units only in North America and United Kingdom alone. Modern Warfare sets a new level of standards for each following game in franchise, maybe too high ones. After firing some of the main programmers and designers from Infinity Ward and leaving the rest of the main crew, everybody was skeptical regarding next installment in the franchise. Theyarch needed to develop next sequel and in that moment they couldn’t catch up with Infinity Ward developers team. They had a really big task to defend and justify themselves like main developers of Call Of Duty franchise after fallout of Infinity Ward.

After announcement of this sequel, almost one year ago, we had interesting tittle and idea to anticipate. Black Ops was anything but a naïve game from the beginning. Black Ops itself was made of the most experienced CIA operatives, trained for the most delicate missions behind enemy lines. As always a lot of controversy was expected from this tittle. With Modern Warfare 2 we got No Russian mission when you jumped in the shoes of undercovered CIA operative that should make his way through a Russian airport in a role of a Russian terrorist and kill everybody who stands in their way. Main story in MW is happening in present, but story in this one throws us back 30 years in the past, during Vietnam War and Invasion on Cuba.

The very beginning of the game is a little confusing. You’re in the interrogation room in the role of Alex Mason, CIA undercover agent who was privileged to be the part of the most elite Black Ops squad who started very unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion. Someone asks you to explain unknown numbers for him, but as it goes you don’t have an idea what he’s talking about. The whole mission is kind of memories of the main characters, and the narrator is changing from a situation to a situation, as you meet someone who worked with you on that mission or the next one, you take his role. For the first time in Call Of Duty francise there is an interesting storyline that will keep you occupied to the end of the game. Treyarch did tremendous job in this field of the game, and story adaptation with gameplay itself. Campaign is around seven hours long, it’s not long enough but nowadays it is some kind of standards for every shooter that came out on the market, but the game has excellent replay value, so you just can’t be bored with it over and over again. During the narration of the story, you will be visiting Cuba, Russia and every possible country in between. That is a really good thing because almost in every mission you will change your environment and it will have huge impact on the variety of the game. All other games in the franchise lacks of variety and this is really good refreshment for franchise.

Lets talk about gameplay. Core of the gameplay stayed literally the same like in every Call of Duty before this one. It is pretty straight forward, move from a point A to a point B and survive doing that, and of course kill as many enemies as you can, in the most brutal way. Graphic Engine shows his age, and after more than 10 years in service, it’s time to go in retirement. It wouldn’t be fair if we didn’t mention that the game has some excellent moments and facial shaders and animations are the best thing in the game. We can say that Treyarch did a fantastic work trying to make it as realistic as possible. Shooting mechanic is pretty much the same like in previous parts of the franchise. Blockbuster action a lot of guns, lots of bullets, brutality all around you and explosion at every step is a recipe for good shooter these days and Black Ops have everything mentioned. Single player portion of the game is really fun to play, you’ll get arsenal of more than 40 guns and pistols and other killing tools, you will ride a tank, shooting from stationary MG, burning your enemy with flamethrower, even flying and shooting from a chopper. That’s is in our opinion the hotspot of the game. A weird thing is that, vechiles are not available in Multiplayer part of the game, still, after seven sequels in this franchise. We can just hope to introduce it in some sequel in near future. Interesting part of the whole game is reintroducing the Zombie Mode. You can play against Zombies alone or with friends in Co-op. Beside this kind of cooperative play, there’s not any other mode for that kind of gameplay, and that’s kind of a strange thing after Denied Ops in Modern Warfare 2, which is one of the best cooperative mod up till date.

Multiplayer portion of the game is the story for itself. Treyarch decided to return Dedicated Servers and that was the best decision out there for this tittle. There’s no more awful Matchmaking and problems with lags don’t exist. Average ping for every server in your region is not above 30ms. Although dedicated servers are in control only by Gameservers company, they are doing terrific work in maintain all servers. The game is out only for one week and there’s not any big problem regarding multiplayer gaming. One part of the gamers community was complaining for strange lag but that was solved with first patch that came out two days after releasing of the game. There’s standard multiplayer modes like in previous tittle: Team Deathmatch, Free For All, Capture The Flag, Domination, Headquarters, Demolition and Search And Destroy. You have Hardcore mode for every of this multiplayer modes when you’ll have reduced HUD and other main rule is one shoot kill. It is one step toward reality but again not a big one. Beside all of this multiplayer modes, there are two new, Wager Mode and Contracts. It’s a pretty interesting mode in which you can challenge other players to play for their money that you can earn playing ordinary multiplayers matches. Only the first three spots of six are getting the money, other three are loosing everything they invest in it. In Wager mode you got Gun Game in which you advance from the weakest to the best gun with every kill. One bullet mode with one bullet in your handgun and knife and couple of more. Leveling is totally diferent than in MW2. Contracts are additional objecties you need to finish during the multiplayer match, of course rewarded with more experience and money. You will level up easier but for every unlockable you will pay certain ammount of money and xp. Althoug technology is not like in modern warfare, Treyarch did an excellent an job in customizing every weapon so you won’t have feeling that you’ll fighting in a war that ended 30 years ago.There are couple of more inovations. RC car is introduced, a small car that have bomb on it and its remotely controle. Killstreaks suffered changes either and now, for example for chopper killstreak you will have control over machine gun in chopper so you will be taking control of the gunner at that moment. At the end of the day, multiplayer part of this game is one big step forward compared to last year’s game. One thing is sure, you will spend hours and hours playing this in multiplayer and you will almost never get bored, because there are challenges everywhere.

Black Ops is fantastic tittle. Treyarch finally got to the top of their potential. Now after weakened Infinity Ward team, Treyarch took the place of main developers of the franchise. As far as we know, second developing team for Call of Duty franchise is Sledgehammer Studios, and now it’s their turn to proove themseves in the front of the fans and everyday bigger Call of Duty community. Have Treyarch done it? We can say they did it very successful. What is the recipe? Listening to the community and fulfiling their wishes is always the best way to make good game, and they have done it. The first day of the sale they trailed last year’s blockbusters with more than 0.9 million copies sold only on the first day. Now they are making new history for this franchise and all of them have our blessing. To the next installement of the game, see you in the warzone.
